What Is Lash Serum?

First things first, what is lash serum? Depending on your beauty background, you may or may not be familiar with lash serums. Lash serums were created to help people grow longer, thicker, and more abundant lashes.

They are easy to apply and, if used correctly, can work wonders for natural lash growth. However, there are also several common mistakes that people can make when applying a lash serum that may cause unwanted side effects.

What Does Lash Serum Do?

Lash serum works by nourishing your lashes and helping them to grow longer and stronger. Just like other hair on your body, lashes have a growth cycle in which they grow, hang on for a while, and then naturally shed off.

This is why you sometimes find fallen eyelashes. But when you are trying to achieve fuller, thicker lashes, you typically want to hold on to as many hairs as possible. That's where lash serum comes in.

The eyelash growth cycle consists of three phases: the anagen phase, the catagen phase, and the telogen phase.

First, the eyelash begins growing in the anagen phase, also known as the active growth phase. During this growth phase, the lash springs up out of the skin and begins to grow in length for one to two months until it is fully grown.

Next, the lash enters the catagen phase, also known as the transition phase. During this transitory phase, the lash moves away from the root and towards its final resting place just below the skin's surface.

Finally, the lash enters the telogen phase, also known as the resting phase. This is the period of time that the lash is just hanging out. This phase usually lasts anywhere between four and nine months.

But why is the lash cycle important to understanding the workings of lash serum? Well, lash serum actually works by extending the telogen phase of the lash growth cycle. This helps the lash to hold on for a longer period of time. Since your lashes won’t be falling out as frequently with the help of lash serum, they will appear to look fuller and denser.

Nourishes

Lash serum works first by nourishing your growing lashes. This helps to ensure that they will grow to their full-length potential. With the help of specially formulated nutrients, lash serum helps your body grow longer lashes that can stay put for longer.

Builds Density

As mentioned before, lash serum helps lengthen the telogen phase. This results in minimal lash shedding, which in turn causes the lashes to be denser. Lash serum is great for clients who are struggling to grow full lashes, leaving them with thin lashes that are spaced out.

If you have a client who wants to get lash extensions but doesn’t have enough natural lash to support the extensions, you may suggest that they first use a lash serum for a few months in order to bulk up their lash line before applying extensions.

Helps Lift Lashes

Lash serums also help to enhance the curl of each individual lash leading to a more lifted look. Although, you can also achieve this effect even more effectively with a lash lift. If your client has a good amount of natural lash but is not ready for the commitment of lash extensions, then you may want to steer them away from lash serum and instead suggest that they try a lash lift for naturally lifted results.

How Do I Apply Lash Serum?

If your clients decide to try a lash serum, then it is essential that they apply the serum correctly in order to avoid any unwanted side effects. Consistency is also key in ensuring that the lash serum works effectively.

Lash serums are not a magic overnight solution but rather a stunning effect that takes time to develop fully. If you are patient and diligent with the application, you should see results in a month or two, depending on the growth phase the majority of the lashes were in at the start of treatment.

Wash Your Face and Hands

One of the most important steps in using a lash serum properly is washing your face and hands, especially near your eyes, before each application. If you apply lash serum over makeup, moisturizing cream, or dirty skin, the serum will not be able to penetrate into the skin to get to work. Use a gentle cleanser and make sure that you remove all natural oils, makeup, or anything else that may be lingering on your eyelids or fingers.

This is a tip that your clients should use anytime they are applying something to their eyes. The eyes are super sensitive, and you should be sure that you are not rubbing them with dirty fingers that could have dirt or bacteria on them. Only clean hands should ever touch your eyes.

Use Serum Sparingly

Less is more. You do not want to glob on the lash serum as this will not improve its function. If you apply too much, it will get into your eyes more easily, which can be dangerous. If you accidentally get it in your eye, make sure you rinse your eyes thoroughly with cold water.

Remember, using an excess amount of serum does not make it work better; it only increases the chance of getting it in your eyes.

Apply Along Your Lash Root Line

To apply lash serum correctly, simply use the applicator brush to apply a thin layer of serum along your lash line from the outer corner of your eye to the inner corner. Only apply lash serum along your top lashes.

Your bottom lashes are not dense enough to keep the serum out of your eyes. Lash serum is extremely powerful so refrain from applying it anywhere besides the lash line as it will cause unwanted hair growth wherever it is applied.

Wait Before Sleeping or Applying Makeup

Let the serum dry for a minute or two before applying any other makeup or products to your face. You want to make sure the lash serum is completely dry before touching or applying anything else to your eyelids.

The same rule goes for sleeping. If you are applying the lash serum at night, make sure that your serum is completely dry before you cuddle into your pillow. You will want the serum to be fully dry before drifting off to sleep.

Do It Consistently

When it comes to lash serum, consistency is key. The serum takes time to work; it is by no means fast-acting. If you want to see results, you need to make sure that you apply it on a regular basis.

If your client wants a lower maintenance solution to fuller lashes, then lash extensions may be a better fit. Yes, with lash extensions they will have to come in once every two weeks for a fill and replacement sets, but there is less daily maintenance.

Of course, this option is only suitable for people who have enough lashes to apply extensions. If your client’s lashes are lacking, suggest that they use a lash serum for a while before there are enough strong lashes to support lash extensions.

Conclusion

Lash serum can be super helpful in growing fuller, stronger lashes. It can also help to keep your lashes intact for longer periods of time without shedding.

Lash serum is great for clients who are trying to bulk up their natural lashes to support a set of eyelash extensions and clients who are simply trying to improve their natural lashes. Lash serum can be a fantastic tool to achieve longer, more voluminous eyelashes after a couple of months of use.
